Brighten up the chilly winter evenings with a seasonal lights spectacular!

Sparkle, glow and shimmer on a magical steam train covered by thousands of colourful lights. illuminate the dark landscape as you journey and feast your eyes on an amazing light show along the way. With festive displays, music and narration, this is a steam train experience not to be missed!

The experience

  • Before boarding, witness the big switch on as we light up the darkness of Sheffield Park Station
  • Board for the magical journey and be seated in the luxury of your own compartment; keeping your visit safe an enjoyable. Add drinks and a special picnic box or hamper stuffed with tasty treats at time of booking and we will put them in your compartment to make the journey extra special.
  • Journey through the Sussex countryside under cover of darkness, with shimmering light and colour as you go. Along the way, enjoy festive scenes among the trees and clearings and a colourful light show orchestrated in time with music and narration. A multi-sensory feast!
  • Arrive at Horsted Keynes Station and disembark for 30 minutes to take photographs of your spectacular train covered in lights. The atmospheric country station adorned with lights and festive decoration provides the perfect backdrop.
  • As you return to Sheffield Park, enjoy a second chance to sparkle through the countryside and view the festive scenes you may have missed the first time.

The whole experience will take around 1 hour 30 minutes.  

Why not add some of delicious pre-packed traditional picnic boxes to enjoy on your journey? Individual Picnic boxes are just £12.50 for Adults and £6.50 for children. (vegetarian boxes ar availble on request)

A selection of drinks is also available to pre-order.

Pease select your picnic boxes and pre-order drinks during the booking process. These will be placed in your compartment before your journey begins for you to enjoy.

  • We regret that orders for Picnic Boxes and drinks have now closed.
  • All Picnic Boxes and drinks on this service are by pre-order only
  • We regret we are unable to cater for any alterations or varainces to the Picnic Boxes advertised
  • Owing to ongoing supply problems within the food industry, substitutions in Picnic Boxes and for drinks may be necessary at short notice 



First Class Compartment (seats up to 6 adults) - £170.00

Third Class Compartment (seats up to 8 adults) - £130.00

Table (seats up to 4 adults) - £110.00

All trains depart from and return to Sheffield Park Station


  • There are toilets at each of our stations
  • We regret there won't be any toliets available on the trains for this service
  • Baby changing facilities are available at each of our stations, but not on our trains


  • There is plenty of free parking at Sheffield Park station


  • We are pleased to offer a specially adapted area for wheelchair users on this service, however space in this area is limited, and we ask that parties are of 4 or less people
  • Please call our Customer Service Team on 01825 720800 or email bookings@bluebell-railway.com if you would like to book seats for wheelchair using passengers
  • Accessible toilets are available at each station, but we regret we have no "Changing Places" toilets, or accessible toilets on our trains


  • Tickets will be issued closer to the event
  • Children under 3yrs (and babies) travel for free and don't need a ticket and are not allocated a seat. They may have to be seated on a parent or guardian's knee for the journey, dependant on space at your table or in your compartment
  • Tickets are valid for the service and date specified on the ticket only
  • Tickets only valid for the class of travel booked - no upgrades are available


  • Compartments are allocated automatically. Parties from separate bookings will not be seated in the same compartment
  • First Class compartments are designed to seat up to 6 adults
  • Third Class compartments are designed to seat up to 8 adults
  • Tables are designed to seat up to 4 adults


  • We're sorry but no dogs, other than registered assistance dogs, are allowed on this service


  • We're sorry but it isn't possible to take prams/buggies/pushchairs onto our trains during this event. These may be left in the care of the station staff at the departure station

On 19 July, the Government moved to Step 4 of its roadmap and removing most legal Covid-19 restrictions.

We ask our visitors to follow Government advice and ‘use personal judgement to manage own risk’.

From 19 July:

  • The legal requirement to wear face coverings has been lifted, however ‘the Government expects and recommends that people wear face coverings in crowded areas’. We encourage our visitors to continue to wear face coverings, particularly in any crowded areas on board our trains and around the Railway
  • We ask our visitors to continue to be mindful and respectful of others in regards to social distancing
  • We will continue to display QR codes for customers wishing to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app
  • We are keeping some of the mitigations such as control of crowds forming, sanitising stations, extra ventilation and some social distancing measures will continue to be in place to enhance visitor safety as life gradually returns to normal

Customers who are feeling unwell or who have had a positive test result and are isolating on their date of travel should not come to the Railway and are asked to contact our customer services team regarding their booking: bookings@bluebell-railway.com
